How to work the works of God

Usually I’ll find obscure Bible verses in the Old Testament. After all, fewer people quote from that side of Scripture even though it’s larger. This time, though, I found verses I hadn’t realized smack in the middle of one of the most popular books in the Bible, the Gospel of John.

For a little context, the two verses are recorded right after sections about Jesus walking on water and Jesus feeding 5,000 people with only five loaves of bread and two fish. After seeing these miracles, the disciples asked Jesus a question I might have asked. In fact, it’s a question I’ve asked recently:

“Then they said to Him, ‘What shall we do, that we may work the works of God?’ Jesus answered and said to them, ‘This is the work of God, that you believe in Him whom He sent.’ ” -John 6:28-29

How incredibly liberating!

When you and I ask what we can do for God, the answer is to believe in His Son. And extending that a little further to orient toward others, our message should encourage people to do that as well.

Serving Suggestions:

(1) Believe.

(2) Discuss. When you think of doing God’s work, is believing in Jesus what comes to mind?
